Honoring our mothers and fathers

by Rev. Rick Pursley

LEARN HIM-LOVE HIM-LIVE HIM

“Honor thy father and thy mother; that their days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” Exodus 20:12

I have observed many on Facebook honoring their mothers by changing their profile pictures on Facebook.  Flower shops and green houses have stayed quite busy as children go and buy flowers to honor their moms.  Our mothers certainly deserved to be honored, not just one day but every day.  God gave mothers many gifts that fathers didn’t necessarily receive.

My own mother went home to the Lord in 2015.  As my Dad worked to provide a home and all of our necessities, it fell to Mom to maintain that home.  To learn to stretch a dollar when times were lean.  To somehow keep a meal warm for four boys and Dad who didn’t always make it to the dinner table at the same time without the aid of a microwave for several years.  Unknown to me and my brothers to this day, I am sure that Mom made unseen sacrifices so that we could have more for ourselves.

Tomorrow is a bitter-sweet day for many.  Some reading this today has recently lost their mothers.  Others it has been a while.  Yet others have mothers that are battling health issues.  I understand your pain. We can honor our Moms who are no longer with us by honoring their memory.  We can recall the lessons they taught us when we were children.

To all of our Moms out there and to those Moms who are in heaven.  We wish you a Happy Mothers Day.  Thank you for loving your children and for your sacrificial love.  God bless!
